Ford leaves no doubt about it: the Mustang Mach-E will become a dangerous rival for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. With its entry-level price of 48 000, it is identical to that Model 3, and you get more theoretical range. Or how the American goes to war on European soil.
Have you ever heard of the “Rule of 3”? No, not that mathematical rule, but the law that states that an electric car is only as popular as its relationship with the Tesla Model 3. At Ford, that rule was close at hand when drawing up the Mustang Mach-E price list. Because the electric crossover/SUV is a remarkably interesting car in the market.
On the heels
Ford sticks an entry-level price of 48 000 euros on the Mustang Mach-E Standard Range. It uses a 258 hp electric motor on the rear axle, has a battery of 76 kWh and can record a theoretical range of 450 kilometers. Let’s take that Tesla Model 3? As a Model 3 Standard Range Plus, it costs 38 000 euros. For that money, you get a 340 hp electric motor on the rear axle, a 54 kWh battery, and a theoretical range of 409 kilometers. So less horsepower for the Mach-E but more range than the Model 3.
Also, the Mach-E is a crossover, so in principle, you have to compare it with the Tesla Model Y, a car of which no prices are known. Although it is plausible that it will be just a bit more expensive than Model 3. This makes this Mustang Mach-E a very good car.
Options? Which options?
Well, probably Ford can put forward such a “low” price because it hides a lot of equipment behind the option lists. Well, that’s not so bad either. For example, you can pay extra for paint color and interior trim, and you can still tick the Technology Pack. This package, which runs from 1700 to 3800 euros (depending on the model), includes an upgraded audio system, a 360° camera, a zippered safety gadget, and a fixed panoramic roof—looking for more options? Bad luck! Everything comes as standard. Okay, you can pay another 399 euros to have your Mach-E delivered to your home. Welcome to the post-Corona era!
As mentioned above, the Mach-E comes in different versions. Initially, there are four versions to choose from. In time the GT top model will be added. The current selection list looks like this:
- Mach-E Standard Range RWD: 258 hp – 76 kWh – 450 km range – €48 000
- Mach-E Extended Range RWD: 285 hp – 99 kWh – 600 km range – €56 150
- Mach-E Standard Range AWD: 258 hp – 76 kWh – 420 km range – €54 950
- Mach-E Extended Range AWD: 338 hp – 99 kWh – 540 km range – €64 425
Timing is everything
On the business market, this Mach-E already has all the weapons to break pots. Especially now that more and more companies are implementing electrification on their fleet. Yet there is a somewhat dark cloud hanging above this Mach-E because thanks to Covid_19, the production had to be stopped temporarily. The result? This year we shouldn’t expect this electric crossover on European soil. However, Ford hopes to roll out the Mach-E in Europe in the first part of 2021. Just when Tesla also hopes to launch the Model Y in our region. Interesting detail: this Model Y will roll off the belt in Germany, while this Mach-E will have to come from America.
